ChatGPT Enterprise vs Claude Enterprise

By the InTheory team · Updated November 2026

Short answer: Most firms under 150 staff do not need either; the Business and Team plans cover SSO, admin and no-training defaults. Enterprise makes sense when you need SCIM provisioning, custom retention, data residency, a HIPAA-ready offering or negotiated terms. ChatGPT Enterprise is sold through sales with custom pricing. Claude Enterprise now has a self-serve option priced as a seat fee plus usage. Compare total cost on your expected usage.

Do you need enterprise at all?

Enterprise plans are built for central IT. If your firm has 40 people and an MSP, the business plans' SSO, admin controls and data terms may be enough. Move up when a specific requirement forces it: an auditor asks for automated provisioning, a client contract demands data residency, or you handle protected health information.

Understanding usage-based pricing

Claude Enterprise charges a seat fee plus usage at API rates, which means heavy users cost more and light users cost less. That can be cheaper than flat seats for a mixed workforce, but harder to budget. Set spend limits, review monthly reports, and run a pilot to estimate usage before an annual commitment.

OpenAI also lists credit-based and token-based pricing for Enterprise. Ask both vendors to model costs on the same usage assumptions.

Regulated industries

Health practices should confirm whether a plan supports a business associate agreement before any protected health information goes in. Claude lists a HIPAA-ready offering on Enterprise. For any vendor, read the agreement, confirm which features are covered, and keep humans approving clinical, legal and financial outputs.

Choose ChatGPT Enterprise if

  • You want data residency options across many regions
  • You need EKM or custom retention negotiated in contract
  • Staff already rely on ChatGPT features
  • You want 24/7 support with SLAs

Choose Claude Enterprise if

  • You want a self-serve enterprise option without a long sales cycle
  • You need a HIPAA-ready offering and confirm it covers your use
  • You prefer paying for actual usage with admin spend limits
  • Your trial shows staff prefer Claude for document-heavy work

Common questions

What is the difference between Claude Team and Claude Enterprise?

Team uses fixed Standard and Premium seat prices for 2 to 150 people. Enterprise adds features like SCIM, role-based permissions, spend limits and a HIPAA-ready offering, and is priced as a seat fee plus usage. Check Anthropic's pricing page for current terms.

Can a small firm buy an enterprise plan?

Sometimes. Claude's self-serve Enterprise lists a 20-seat minimum. ChatGPT Enterprise is sold through sales. Ask whether the extra features are required by a client, regulator or insurer before paying for them.

Does enterprise make AI output reliable?

No. Enterprise plans change security, admin and contract terms, not the need for review. Keep a person approving anything that affects a client, a price or a legal or medical decision.
