What is speed to lead?
Speed to lead is the time between a prospect making an enquiry, by form, call, text or chat, and a meaningful first response from the business, usually measured in minutes for inbound sales.
Prospects who reach out to a service business are often contacting several providers at once. The firm that responds first with something useful frequently gets the conversation, and sometimes the job. That makes response time one of the simplest levers on sales, and one of the most overlooked, because many firms have never measured it.
Measuring it is straightforward if enquiries land in one place. Compare the timestamp of each form, call or message with the first real reply. Look at averages, but also at the slowest tenth, evenings and weekends, where most of the delay usually hides. An automated acknowledgment helps, but it is not the same as a real response that answers the question or books a time.
Common improvements include routing enquiries to whoever is on duty instead of a shared inbox, sending texts as well as emails, offering online booking, and using an AI receptionist or answering service for after-hours calls. People should still handle pricing, eligibility and anything that sounds like advice. Track conversion rate alongside response time to see whether faster replies are actually producing more clients.
Example
For example, a personal injury law firm measures its response time and finds weekday enquiries get a call back within an hour, but weekend web forms wait until Monday. It adds an after-hours intake service that gathers basic facts and books a callback, while an attorney still decides whether the firm takes each case.
