What is an AI readiness assessment?

By the InTheory team · Updated November 2026

An AI readiness assessment is a structured review of your workflows, data, software and policies that shows where AI or automation would pay back and what must be fixed first. The output is a ranked list of opportunities, the risks attached to each, and a recommended first pilot with measures of success.

What gets reviewed

Workflows: where staff copy, chase or retype information. Data: whether customer and job records are complete and live in one place. Tools: what you pay for, what overlaps and what integrates. People: who would own a change and how much time they have. Policy: whether staff already use AI tools, and with what information.

In a property management firm, for example, the assessment might find that maintenance requests arrive by phone, email and portal, and that the real first fix is one intake route, not an AI model.

What a useful result looks like

You should finish with three to five opportunities ranked by value and effort, a baseline for the top one, and a clear statement of what not to do yet. Be wary of an assessment that ends in a long list with no priority, or one that recommends the assessor's own product every time. InTheory treats days 1 to 30 of an engagement as this diagnosis.
