What is an AI readiness assessment?

An AI readiness assessment is a structured review of a business's workflows, data, software and team habits to identify where AI or automation would realistically save time or money, what must be fixed first, and in what order to proceed.

The useful version is grounded in operations, not technology. It looks at where hours actually go each week, which tasks repeat, where information gets retyped, and where delays cost revenue, such as slow responses to new enquiries or late invoices. Only then does it ask which of those problems AI, plain automation or a settings change would solve.

It also checks the foundations. Is customer data in one trustworthy place or scattered across spreadsheets? Do your core tools have usable integrations? Are there written processes, or does everything live in one person's head? Is there any policy on AI use today? Weak foundations do not rule out AI, but they usually come first on the roadmap.

A good assessment ends with a short, ranked list of opportunities, each with the expected effort, the risks, who would need to approve outputs, and the metric that would show it worked. It should also say plainly where AI is not worth it yet. Be wary of assessments that conclude every problem needs a large custom build.

Example

For example, an assessment at a 25-person HVAC company might find that the biggest cost is unanswered calls during peak season, not estimating. The recommended first step could be call overflow handling and faster callbacks, with estimating support pushed to a later phase once the CRM is cleaned up. The findings here are illustrative.
