AI automation for MyCase

MyCase is popular with small firms in family law, personal injury, criminal defense and estate planning, where one attorney may carry dozens of active matters with a single paralegal. The pain is less about strategy and more about volume: scanned records nobody has time to read, client portal messages piling up, and invoices drafted late on a Friday.

MyCase's AI is branded 8am IQ. It includes a document assistant for summaries, a case assistant that searches across notes, filings and messages with citations, a writing assistant, and a discovery assistant that runs OCR on scanned files. MyCase says it is included with MyCase Advanced. Anything client-facing still needs attorney review, and the firm should document how AI is used under ABA Formal Opinion 512.

Practical automations

Make scanned records searchable

Run medical records, police reports or bank statements through the discovery assistant's OCR so the case assistant can find dates and facts. A paralegal spot-checks key pages against the original.

First-pass document summaries

Summarize long pleadings or contracts into parties, dates and key terms. The attorney reads the source for anything that drives advice or a filing.

Portal message drafts

Use the writing assistant to turn rough notes into clear, polite replies to client portal messages. The attorney or paralegal approves before sending.

Invoice reminder drafts

Draft courteous payment reminders for overdue invoices, with tone adjusted for long-standing clients. The office manager decides who gets a call instead.

Lead capture through Zapier

Send website form and scheduling-tool leads into MyCase through Zapier, tagged by practice area, so intake staff work from one list.

Matter timeline prep

Ask the case assistant for a timeline built from case documents before a client meeting, then verify each cited source.

Pitfalls to avoid

  • Relying on OCR output from poor scans without checking. Handwritten notes and faxed records often come through wrong.
  • Assuming every MyCase plan includes the same AI features. Check what your tier includes before training staff.
  • Using AI drafts for sensitive family law or criminal matters without a careful human read for tone and accuracy.

When not to automate

If your document volume is low and your paralegal already knows every file, AI summaries add a review step without saving much. If client messages pile up because nobody owns the portal, assign an owner before adding AI. For anything that will be filed or relied on as advice, a lawyer reads the source, and the AI output is only a map.

Common questions

What is 8am IQ for MyCase?

8am IQ is the generative AI built into MyCase. It includes document, case, writing and discovery assistants that summarize files, search across case data with citations, refine drafts and convert scanned documents into searchable text. MyCase says it is included in MyCase Advanced; check current plans for details.

Does using MyCase AI waive privilege?

We cannot give legal advice on that. Firms should review MyCase's published AI and security commitments, their own state bar guidance and ABA Formal Opinion 512, and set a written policy. Keep AI use inside approved tools and keep attorney review on client-facing output.

Can MyCase connect to other tools?

Yes. MyCase has a Zapier app for moving leads and contacts in from forms, scheduling and marketing tools. For accounting, check the native QuickBooks Online integration first before building anything custom.
