Question

What does a vCIO (virtual CIO) do?

By the InTheory team · Updated November 2026

A vCIO, or virtual CIO, plans and reviews a company's technology on a recurring schedule: IT budget, hardware refresh, security posture, vendor renewals and a roadmap. The service is most often provided by a managed IT provider as part of its contract, delivered through quarterly or semi-annual business reviews rather than weekly involvement.

What a vCIO meeting usually covers

Expect a report on open tickets, devices due for replacement, backup and patch status, licenses, and a security score. The vCIO then proposes projects for the next quarter, such as replacing aging laptops, adding multi-factor authentication or moving file shares to SharePoint. This is valuable housekeeping, and many small businesses never get it at all.

Where the role stops

Because the vCIO often works for the IT provider, their view centers on infrastructure and the services that provider sells. They are less likely to redesign how a lead becomes a proposal, or to tell you that half your marketing tools overlap. That is business process and revenue work. If your biggest costs are manual handoffs between your CRM, proposals and billing, you may need a different kind of help alongside the vCIO, such as a fractional technology lead focused on workflows.
