Fractional AI and technology leadership in Denver

InTheory is the AI practice of Innovation Theory, a Denver firm operating since 2011. We work as a part-time technology and AI lead for established service businesses with roughly 5 to 150 staff: firms that have outgrown ad hoc software decisions but do not need, or cannot yet justify, a full-time CTO.

Denver County had 21,774 employer firms in 2023, and many of them share the same problems: a CRM nobody trusts, proposals assembled by hand, and a Monday spreadsheet rebuilt from three systems. We pick one expensive recurring workflow, set a baseline, and measure the change over 90 days.

Service businesses in Denver

Denver's service economy clusters in a few places. Downtown, LoDo, Union Station and the Golden Triangle hold law, accounting, advisory and consulting offices, where the costly work is intake, engagement letters, document handling and client reporting. RiNo has a creative and agency base that lives on proposals and recurring client reports. Denver International Airport and the distribution economy around it support freight brokers and logistics firms juggling quotes, paperwork and customer updates. Healthcare employers such as Denver Health and the University of Denver anchor a further ring of clinics and professional service providers.

Denver County had 21,774 employer firms and 27,422 employer establishments in 2023, plus 86,399 nonemployer establishments in 2024 (Census QuickFacts). Transportation and warehousing receipts topped $13.7 billion in 2022, reflecting the airport and distribution economy, alongside a dense base of professional-services firms downtown and in Cherry Creek.

Working with us in Denver

Do you meet in person in Denver?

Yes. We are a Denver firm, so on-site work is normal: diagnostic interviews, workflow mapping sessions with your office manager or operations lead, and team training. Most weekly check-ins happen by video to keep costs down, and we come to your office whenever being in the room is more useful.

What does a fractional CTO cost for a Denver service business?

Our plans are $2,500 a month for Advisory, $5,000 for Lead + delivery and $7,000 for Embedded, over an initial 90-day engagement with written scope before kickoff. Software subscriptions, major custom builds and round-the-clock support are budgeted separately, so you see those costs before you commit.

Most Denver fractional CTOs work with startups. Is that you?

No. Our focus is established service businesses with recurring sales and a measurable bottleneck, such as a slow proposal process or missed enquiries. We are less useful to a pre-revenue software startup that needs someone to architect a product from scratch.
